In a compressed air starter comprising a compressed air rotary engine and a pinion 3 carried by a pinion shaft which pinion by axial movement may be brought into or out of engagement with the gear ring of the engine flywheel 24 and which axial movement simultaneously controls the admission of compressed air for the compressed air engine, the shaft of the compressed air engine and the pinion shaft are coupled via an intermediate gearing consisting of a pinion 5 mounted on the engine shaft and the internally toothed gear ring 6 of a cup shaped member 7 arranged on the pinion shaft. As shown the cup 7 forms a compressed air control member.
