Abstract
979,976. Soil stabilization. DIAMOND ALKALI CO. Feb. 26, 1962 [Feb. 27, 1961], No. 7436/62. Heading E1F. Earth strata containing acid forming minerals, including sulphide minerals which are converted to sulphuric acid on exposure to water and oxygen, are treated with an alkali metal silicate solution whereby the sulphuric acid reacts with the silicate to form a silica gel. The gel has the dual effect of fixing the acid waters and of preventing seepage of water from the strata. An oxidizing agent, such as H 2 O 2 , alkali metal peroxide, hypochlorite, permanganate or bichromate, may be added to the silicate solution to ensure complete oxidation of the sulphide materials. The invention is described in connection with the treatment of abandoned mines from which acid containing water is seeping.
