970,933. Matching waveguide impedances. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 11, 1960], No. 34788/60. Heading H1W. Two dissimilar waveguides 1, 2 are coupled by a dielectric rod 3 the cross-section and permittivity of which are great enough to ensure that the wavelength #g of energy guided by the rod is less than its free space wavelength # 0 . Preferably, the cross-section of the rod should equal the mean between the cross-section of the smaller guide and the cross-section of the rod for which # g =# 0 . This choice of dimensions ensures that the discontinuity in the waveguide walls has no effect. The rod may be made of polystyrene and may have a shape similar to that of the waveguides or, where the waveguides are of dissimilar shape, may have a shape intermediate between the two, e.g. a polygonal rod between rectangular and circular waveguides. The rod may be held in a foamed polystyrene support 6. It may have stepped or tapered ends.
