Abstract

970,887. Pipe joints. L. M. C. SEAMARK. Jan. 29, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1962; Jan. 17, 1963], Nos. 5125/62 and 2196/63. Heading F2G. A pipe coupling comprises a gapped and/or slotted sleeve 1 with serrations 2 on its inner periphery and buttress screw-threads 4 on its outer periphery, having an inner diameter smaller than, and adapted to be forced on, each of the pipe ends 3 to be coupled and a clamping member 6 having internal buttress screwthreads 5 to engage with the screwthreads 4 for limited axial movement with respect to the clamping member, causing an inwardly directed radial component of force to be applied to the pipe end. Axial movement will occur, when the clamping member 6 is rotated, until the inner ends of the sleeves 1 bear up against the outer sides of annular flanges 8 in the member 6 and then further rotation causes over-riding of the buttress screw-threads and consequent inward pressure on the gapped sleeves 1, causing the serrations 2 to bite into the outer surfaces of the pipes. The buttress threads may be lefthanded at one end and right-handed at the other, in which case the coupling is assembled by the rotation of the clamping sleeve; or the threads at both ends may be similar, in which case the coupling is assembled by screwing the clamping sleeve on to one pipe and then inserting and rotating the other. The distortion of the gapped sleeve 1 under inward pressure may be furthered by longitudinal slots which extend over part of its length. The clamping member may be angled and may have a tapered internal flange, against which pipe ends may abut, to couple together pipes not in axial alignment. By having two clamping members 13, Fig. 6, adapted to be held together by a flanged sleeve 18 and having their inner end faces cut at an angle so as to abut the two sides, of a tapered middle member 14, which is also held by the flanged sleeve 18, the angle between the pipes 3 may be varied by rotating the middle member 14 relatively to one or both of the clamping members 13. In all embodiments, recesses are provided for sealing rings.
