Abstract

A coating composition comprises a particulate polyepoxide and a curing agent of the formula: <FORM:0963557/C3/1> in which R is an organic radical, m = 0 or 1, n = 0 or 1, and the aromatic nuclei may be substituted by one or more halogen or hydrocarbyl groups. The coating compositions may also contain barytes, mica, slate powder, silica flour, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, cadmium red or phthalocyanine pigments. Preferred curing agents are the adducts of trimellitic anhydride and a polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene glycol, glycerol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, pentaerythritol, bis-(4-hydroxy-phenyl) methane, bis(4-hydroxy-phenyl) propane, and 1, 1, 21, 21-tetrakis (4-hydroxy-phenyl)-ethane. The reaction product of trimellitic anhydride and glycerol containing a mixture of di-anhydride, trisanhydride and unreacted trimellitic anhydride may be used.ALSO:An article is coated with a particulate polyepoxide and a curing agent of the formula <FORM:0963557/B1-B2/1> in which R is an organic radical, n=0 or 1, m=0 or 1 and the aromatic nuclei may be substituted with one or more halogen or hydrocarbyl groups either by spraying the powder thereon and then heating to at least 100 DEG C., or by preheating the article to at least 80 DEG C. and immersing it in a fluidized bed of the powder, followed by heating to at least 100 DEG C. The article may be preheated to between 120 DEG C. and 175 DEG C. before spraying or immersion, and the post-heating temperature may in both cases be between 150 and 220 DEG C. The spraying process may be by compressed air or electrostatic force. The coating compositions may also contain barytes, mica, slate powder, silica flour, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, cadmium red or phthalocyanine pigments. The articles which may be coated include capacitors, hammers, bolts, pins, tubular sleeves, hooks, ventilators, screen, switches, electrical fittings, protective caps and guards. Preferred curing agents are the adducts of trimellitic anhydride and a polyhydric alcohol such as ethylene glycol, glycerol, propylene glycol, butylene glycol, pentaerythritol, bis-(4-hydroxy-phenyl) methane, bis (4-hydroxy-phenyl) propane, and 1, 1 21 21-tetrakis (4-hydroxy-phenyl)-ethane. The reaction product of trimellitic anhydride and glycerol containing a mixture of dianhydride, tris-anhydride and unreacted trimellitic anhydride may be used.
