Abstract
959,089. Printing surfaces. COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. Sept. 7, 1960, No. 30783/60. Heading B6C. [Also in Division D2] In a method of preparing the design on a master sheet for use in duplicating, pictorial illustrations or other matter can be copied on the master sheet from an original by an arrangement comprising a transparent transfer sheet 10 with an attached transparent transfer layer 11 overlying a transparent master sheet 12, and an original 13 having a pictorial illustration 14 on its surface in contact with the master 12, whereby the illustration 14 is visible from above and can be copied on to the master 12 by applying pressure on the transfer sheet 10 by means of a stylus, pencil, or the like. Where a mirror image is required on the master 12, the latter is placed on top of the transfer sheet 10 overlying the layer 11, and the sheet 10 is placed over the original 13. The inscribing surface 20 on the sheet 10, or that on the master sheet in the mirror image method, may be frosted or otherwise treated so that the image being traced on the inscribing surface can be seen. The transfer sheet 10 may be parchment or a film of vinyl, polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose acetate, or polyvinylidene chloride. The transfer material 11 is preferably entirely released from the sheet 10 on impact or pressure, and may comprise paraffin wax, carnauba wax, spermaceti wax, beeswax, or polyethylene glycol. For use in the usual hectograph spirit duplicating machine, the transfer material 11 may contain one or more complementary colour formers which are transparent, and the copy sheets are wetted by a solution containing a complementary colour former: or colour may be produced on copy sheets by the use of active reagents such as ferric chloride and gallic acid in the material 11 and the copy sheets.
