Abstract
957,534. Melt-spinning apparatus. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd. Dec. 7, 1962 [Jan. 18, 1962], No. 1831/62. Heading B5B. Synthetic polymer filaments 5 are meltspun through holes in a spinneret 7, the face of which has an elongated shape, the holes being positioned along a line or lines at least substantially conforming to the entire outline of the spinneret, and cooled at least partially, by a flow of gas (indicated arrows, Fig. 1) directed outwardly from an elongated perforate member 3, of generally elliptical cross - section located within the space surrounded by the filaments, the direction of any part of the flow intersecting the direction of travel of the filaments. Gas is supplied to the perforate member via pipe 1. Polyhexamethylene adipamide filaments may be so spun, and the gaseous flow, which may comprise air or air and steam, may be of non-uniform intensity in either an axial plane, or a radial plane, of the elongated perforate member, the inside of the perforate member being partitioned to permit this, e.g. with horizontal screens so that gas at different height levels may be at different pressures. Different gases, e.g. steam and air, may be introduced so as to emerge at different height levels of the member. Further means for cooling the filaments may be used, e.g. a cross-current flow of air, or an inwardly directed flow of air, or a liquid quench bath. The spinneret face may be of oblong shape with convex short sides, i.e. like a datebox, and the curved surface of the perforate member may be of perforated metal plate, wire mesh, or sintered metal material.
