Abstract
957,145. Variable-speed gear. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 12, 1962 [Nov. 24, 1961], No. 42627/62. Heading F2D. A variable-speed gear comprises an input shaft 10 carrying the planet pinions 26 of a spur gear differential, the ring gear 30 of the differential driving through a gear 34, a reversing train 22 and a gear 40 to one race 46 of a non - planetating continuously - variable - ratio toric race friction gear 20 while the sun gear 29 of the differential drives through a shaft 32 to the other toric race 42 of the friction gear and also to the race 64 of a second differential 18 having friction balls 60 mounted in a cage fast with an output shaft 12, the balls 60 also engaging a race 62 formed in the back of the first toric race. The ratio of the gearing is varied from forward through neutral to reverse on tilting idlers 44 engaging between the toric races by shifting a sleeve 55 &c. either manually or electrically. Torque-responsive loading of the friction gear elements is effected by balls 69 riding in cam slots under the bias of a spring 74 and situated in the drive path from the differential sun gear 29 to the friction race 64 of the second differential.
