954,690. Ball joints. ENGINEERING PRODUCTIONS (CLEVEDON) Ltd. Oct. 22, 1962 [Nov. 3, 1961], No. 39466/61. Heading E2F. [Also in Division F2] The annular dust cover 7 (Fig. 1) or 8 (Fig. 4) is made of flexible micro-cellular material containing a multitude of unconnected air pockets and is adapted at one end to form a seal around the ball stud 4 and at the other end to form a seal around the mouth of the housing. The cover is sufficiently flexible to accommodate rocking and rotating movements of the ball stud, and is compressed axially when a boss 5 on a connecting rod or link is assembled on the stud. One or both ends of the cover may be secured by an adhesive to the stud or housing or alternatively the cover may be secured to flanged stiffening rings 9, 10 of metal or other material loosely or tightly fitted on the stud and housing respectively. One of the rings 9, 10 may be omitted. The cover is made of rubber, polyurethane or any other elastomer from which the micro-cellular material can be produced, and when compressed tends to hold the stud square with the housing.
