[Also in Division G5] In a Hall-plate playback head of generally known construction, a ferrite bridge-piece 7, whose width s is the same as the record track and which defines the effective working area 8 of a layer of Hall material 2, deposited on a ferrite base 1 is of substantially square crosssection where it contacts the layer 2. Since the output relative to that of an infinitely wide head is found to depend on the ratio of head-width s to the corresponding Hall-plate depth b, Fig. 3, the depth b is chosen to approximate to the width s determined by the record track. A German thesis relating to Hall-plate dimensions is referred to.
