Abstract
Hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide are removed from waste gas from a Claus kiln by passing the gas through a first and second scrubbing tower in series, aqueous ammonia solution is introduced into the second tower and is passed countercurrently to the gas through the two towers. (NH4)2S2O3 is formed in the first tower and reacts with H2S in the second tower to precipitate sulphur. Gas leaving the second tower may be passed through a third or more towers in series countercurrently to a flow of water and the liquid from the base of the last tower is fed to the second tower.
