Abstract
946,831. Mattresses. VICKERS RESEARCH Ltd. Oct. 3, 1961 [Sept. 5, 1960], No. 30553/60. Heading A4M. A mattress, for turning bed-ridden patients, comprises two inflatable, elongated bags 1, 2 disposed side-by-side and joined, as at 3, conduit means connected to the bags for conveying gaseous medium to and from the bags, and control means arranged for manual or automatic actuation and co-operating with the conduit means to control the flow of gaseous medium through the latter, the arrangement being such that when one bag is being inflated through the conduit means the other bag is being deflated. In one arrangement the mattress is initially inflated through a connection 6 in the bag 1 which selectively communicates with the bag 2 via a conduit connection 6 provided with a valve 5 which may be opened so as to permit flow in either direction through the conduit 6. Tapes 7 within the bags 1, 2 at the leg support end are secured to the top and bottom surfaces to limit relative displacement thereof. In an arrangement for automatic operation with the valve 5 closed a changeover valve is provided which is operated by a differential pressure device communicating with the bags 1, 2 whereby one of the said bags is connected by a conduit to a continuous air supply and the other bag is placed in restricted communication to atmosphere by a further conduit, and vice versa. Alternatively, a reversible pump controlled by a differential pressure device is interposed in a conduit connecting the interiors of the bags.
