Abstract
943,064. Locating conducting bodies. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCRAPPIJ N.V. May 8,1962 [May 10,1961],No. 17653/62. Heading G1N. [Also in Division E1] A wellhead comprises a casing head 28, a blowout preventer 29, a tubular member 69 fixed adjacent the preventer and having a portion made of non-magnetic material, and electrical coil means 61a, 62a, 63a carried by the portion, the arrangement being that if a drill pipe tool joint such as 56 is positioned within the part 61a or 63a of the coil means a signal is generated. The wellhead is located on the seabed 13, and the signal indicates that a joint is not within the preventer so that the preventer may be closed. The exciting coil 62a is connected to a power source on a barge, and pick-up coils 61a,63a are differentially connected or oppositely wound and connected to a voltmeter on the barge. The portion surrounds or is encased by the tubular member, and has a narrow slot extending vertically over a distance greater than the span of the pick-up coils and filled with epoxy resin. In the coil means shown in Fig. 4, the exciting coil is dispensed with. Specification 873,481 is referred to.
