Abstract
940,024. Driving helicopter rotors. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. Nov. 23, 1960 [Dec. 4, 1959], No. 41181/59. Headings B7W and B7G. [Also in Division F2] In two-stage bevel reduction gearing, for the rotor 1, Fig. 1, of a helicopter, a bevel gear 2 on the rotor 1 is engaged by two pinions 3, Fig. 2, which rotate on converging axes and are coupled by resilient load-equalising quill shafts 4 to respective bevel wheels 5 engaged by a central driving pinion 13. A distance bush 6 is mounted between each pinion 3 and wheel 5. The bevel wheels have spiral teeth, the pinions 3, 5 having teeth of the same hand to balance end loads. As shown the pinion 13 is driven through flexible couplings 15, 16, free-wheel 30 and two-stage reduction gearing 18 ... 21 from an engine 22. An hydraulic disc brake 23 is provided. The helicopter tail rotor 25 is driven through the bevel gearing shown, and an oil pump 8 is driven by an extension of a quill shaft 4. A crop-spraying pump may be driven by one of the wheels 5. In a modification the gear 2 is engaged by two pairs of pinions 3 and wheels 5 driven by two engines arranged in line on diametrically opposite sides of the gear 2. In a further modification two engines 22, Fig. 4, on converging axes drive pinions 13 engaging two outer wheels 5 and a central wheel 31 driving the tail rotor 25. The gear 2 is driven by three pinions 3 coupled through respective quill shafts to the wheels 5 and 31.
