Abstract
A solution of a solid in a liquid is concentrated by introducing the solution into the top of a <PICT:0939431/III/1> chamber 9 in the form of an unsupported liquid-film, which is atomized in a downward direction by blowing hot air against the liquidfilm from a nozzle 4. The film of liquid is produced by pumping the solution through a narrow tube 1 on to a curved plate of fish-tail shape (not shown). The hot air nozzle may also be of fish-tail shape, and it is disposed so that the air-blast discharges directly into the liquid-film as it leaves the plate. Concentrated solution is collected in vessel 12, and part of it is discharged from the system through pipe 14. Air saturated with vapour is withdrawn from chamber 9 by fan 131, and is introduced into the lower part of tower 15. As the air flows up the tower 15, it is scrubbed by solution to be concentrated, introduced through pipe 22, which flows downwards over the coke-packing 16. The preheated solution, withdrawn from the base of tower 15, is pumped, together with part of the concentrated solution withdrawn from the vessel 12, through valve 21 to the feed-tube at the top of chamber 9. The evaporation of solutions of sodium sulphate is referred to.
