Abstract
A heat treatable alloy steel comprises .C.0.3-0.45% .Cr.6-15% .Mo.5-10% .Co.4.5-12% .V.up to 3% .W.up to 10% .Mn.up to 2% .Ti.up to 2% .Nb.up to 3% .Ta.up to 0.5% .B.up to 0.1% .Fe.the balance The following impurities may also be present .S.e.g. 0.014-0.019% .P.e.g. 0.02-0.12% .Si.e.g. 0.22-0.56% .Ni.e.g. 0.04-0.12% and Cu in nominal amounts Heat treatments are disclosed as follows: (a) austenize at 2100 DEG F., air cool and temper at 1100 DEG F. for 2+2 hours; (b) austenize at 2100 DEG F., transfer to a constant temperature bath at 400-700 DEG F. for 8-14 hours and then air cool; and (c) austenize at 2100 DEG F., isothermal treatment for 15 mins., then tempering at 1150 DEG F. for ten mins. prior to air cooling.
