Abstract

A composite liner for grinding mills, e.g. ball and rod mills, comprises a carbidic cast iron face layer metallurgically bonded to a backing of softer and tougher metal or alloy. Preferably, the face is of nickel-chromium white cast iron and the backing spheroidal graphite cast iron. In an example, molten cast iron for the face layer having the composition: C 3.0%, Si 0.4%, Mn 0.4%, S 0.08%, P 0.02%, Ni 3.8%, Cr 2.0%, the balance being iron, is poured at 1450 DEG C. and when the surface is partially solidified, molten cast iron for the backing layer having the composition: C 3.5%, Si 2.4%, Mn 0.2%, S 0.02%, P 0.03%, Mg 0.06%, the balance being iron, is then poured on top. To prevent oxidation of the surface of the first metal a flux such as borax may be placed in the mould or added in liquid form with the first metal. The composite casting may be heated at 275 DEG C. for 8-24 hours to relieve internal stresses, temper any martensite and transform austenite to bainite. This heat treatment may be preceded by heating at about 450 DEG C. for 4-8 hours to precipitate carbon from austenite, thus causing further martensite to be formed on cooling below the Ms temperature.
