926,826. Packaging-machines. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. June 7, 1961 [Aug. 2, 1960], No. 20588/61. Class 94(1). A machine for packaging containers e.g. bottles, in a carton 15 having top, side, and bottom panels comprises a conveyer 11 delivering the bottles on to a plate 14 where they are segregated in pairs by stop members 17, 18, a second conveyer 21 delivering a blank to each pair of bottles, and a vertically reciprocating pusher 49 which forces the blanks downwards on to the bottles. Bottle conveying. The stops 17 hold the foremost bottle during application of the carton. When stops 17 are withdrawn, pusher members 19 on conveyer chains 20 enter behind the packaged bottles and urge them along the plate 14. Stops 17 are again extended and secondary stops 18 are withdrawn allowing another pair of bottles to be advanced for packaging; stops 18 again prevent further bottles from moving forward. Forming cartons. The carton blanks have a top panel 28, Fig. 7, side panels 29, and beyond these, closure panels, Fig. 2 (not shown). Openings 31 with tabs 33 enable the carton to be forced over a bottle neck, Fig. 6, Further tabs on the side panels 29 conform to the base of the bottle, and others are turned in to provide finger holds at 39. As each blank is carried by conveyer 21, it passes under rotating folders 41 which force down side panels 29. When the carton is in position over the bottles, pusher plates 55, 56 force the panel 28 down thereby deflecting tabs 33, Fig. 3. Lateral members on the pusher 49 turn the outer part of the panel 28 about fold lines 38, and side plates 62 force down the side panels 29. The closure panels are turned under the bottles subsequently. The pusher 49 is enabled to reciprocate vertically by parallel linkage 67, 70, 71 and is driven through cam and roller mechanism 81, 82 from a shaft 44. Conveyer 21 and rotating folders 41 are mutually adjustable to accommodate different sizes of bottle. Specifications 871,045, 873,722 and 885,916 are referred to.
