The various steps of a microprogramme are called for over a set of gates some of which are common to a number of microprogrammes and others of which are individual to a particular microprogramme. As shown " add and " subtract " instructions are received as signals on lines 40 and 41 respectively and are applied as inputs to a number of " and " gates (shown as small rectangles). A stepping switch 47 opens these gates in turn to apply signals to further gates (large rectangles) which initiate the steps of the microprogramme. It will be seen that gates 43-46 are operative for " add " and " subtract " instructions (they are enabled over " or " gate 42) while 48 and 49 are individual to these instructions respectively.
