Abstract

Foams are produced from thermoplastic organic polymers using as the expanding agent a hydrated inorganic salt or mixture thereof capable of evolving water of crystallization at the plastifying temperature of the polymer. Polymers operable in the process are homopolymers of styrene, copolymers of styrene and minor amounts of acrylonitrile or methyl methacrylate and blends of styrene polymers with 2-15% of one or more rubbery butadiene-styrene polymers. Numerous hydrated inorganic salts are specified; those used in the examples are Al2(SO4)3 18H2O, Al2(SO4)3 K2SO4 24H2O and Na2S2O3 5H2O. Optionally nucleating agents, e.g. finely divided aluminium oxide, calcium silicate, diatomaceous earth, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, and liquid plasticizers, e.g. white mineral oil, soy bean oil and butyl stearate may be added to the foamable mixture. The various ingredients of the foamable mixture are blended together and extruded at temperatures from about 140 DEG to 160 DEG C.ALSO:Foams are produced from thermoplastic organic polymers using as the expanding agent a hydrated inorganic salt or mixture thereof capable of evolving water of crystallisation at the plastifying temperature of the polymer.
