Abstract

902,317. Electromagnetic switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Sept. 20, 1960 [Oct. 22, 1959], No. 32307/60. Class 38 (5). A manually-operable circuit-breaker having an operating handle projecting from a casing is combined with an electromagnetic operating mechanism having a length not substantially greater than the length of the circuit-breaker casing and a depth not substantially greater than the depth of the casing and handle. The handle 5 of the circuit-breaker 2 is movable between slot ends 54 and projects between spring wires 11 secured at 11<SP>1</SP> to a lever 6 pivoted at 14 and an opening 10 through which the handle 5 projects. Portions 8, 9 of the lever 6 are recessed at 34, 34<SP>1</SP> to allow room for movement of a U-shaped lever 21 pivoted at 28 and a tension spring 31 having its ends secured to the lever 6 at 33 and to the lever 21 at 29. A pin 42 projects from the lever 21 between to coupled plunger armatures of respective electromagnets 37, 38. When the electromagnet 37 is energized the pin 42 is moved downward rotating the lever 21 anticlockwise until the spring 31 crosses the centre line of the lever 6 and snaps the lever 6 clockwise to operate the circuit-breaker 2. During this movement a screw 48 on the lever 6 operates a change-over switch 43 to. disconnect the coil of the electromagnet 37 and prepare the circuit of the electromagnet 38 for a subsequent operation (Fig. 3, not shown). During such operation a screw 49 on the lever 6 operates the change-over switch 43 in the other direction.
