901,576. Drawing wire. SYNCRO MACHINE CO. Sept. 26, 1960 [March 18, 1960], No. 33019/60. Class 83 (4). A counting mechanism for a wire drawing machine of the storage type wherein wire is accumulated on the drawing blocks of earlier stages and periodically paid off to drawing dies of later stages comprises a rotatable member mounted above and in axial alignment with the corresponding drawing block and independently thereof, means guiding a wire passing from the corresponding drawing block to the succeeding drawing die through said rotatable member at an offaxis position, a switch, and means driven by said rotatable member when wire accumulates on or is paid off the corresponding block to actuate said switch to stop the corresponding and all preceding drawing blocks when the number of wire turns on the corresponding blocks reaches a predetermined upper limit and to restart the blocks when the number of wire turns on the corresponding block reaches a predetermined lower limit. The machine comprises a base 10, 11, 12, drawing blocks 13, 14, 15, 16 and a motor 22 which drives the blocks through magnetic clutches 50, 51, 52, 53 and gears 36, 37. A conical member 41 surrounds the skirt 32 of each block and provides a passageway through which cooling air is blown. Fixed to the driving shaft 28 of each block is a sleeve 42 which rotates with the shaft and has a flange 43 which forms a brake drum. Free to rotate on the sleeve 42 is a second sleeve 44 to which is fixed a disc 45 which carries a pin 46 and a sheave 48. The pin 46 carries a brake-band 47 which encircles the brake drum with an adjustable pressure to place a limited amount of tension on the wire being drawn. Each counting mechanism 24 comprises a U-shaped member 55 (Fig. 5), mounted on a spindle 56 which is supported in a plate 58 carried by the super-structure 54. Fixed to the spindle 56 is a gear 62 which in the embodiment described has one tooth and meshes with a gear 65 mounted on a shaft 63. Between the gear 65 and a boss on the plate 58 is a spring washer 66 and fixed to the shaft is a disc 68. Above the disc 68 is a friction disc 79 and pressed against the friction disc by a spring 76 is a further disc 71 which has a plurality of threaded holes 72 to take one or more pins 73. Mounted on the plate 54 (Fig. 5), is a switch 77, the operating arm 78 of which extends into the path of the pins 73. When the switch 77 is operated it remains operated until the arm is moved in the opposite direction. The member 55 has a pair of bars 80 joining its lower edges and a further pair of bars 81 extending across the bars 80. The wire being drawn extends from the sheave 48 through the space defined by the member 55 and the bars 80 and 81 so that as the disc 45 rotates the member 55 is driven in rotation and drives the gears 62 and 65 until a pin 73 operates the switch and stops the corresponding block and all preceding blocks. During the period that wire is accumulating on any particular drawing block the disc 45 rotates in the same direction as the block but at a slower rate. When the block stops, wire is drawn off by the following block and the disc 45 rotates in the opposite direction to the normal direction of rotation of the block until the switch 77 is again operated and the stationary blocks re-start.
