Abstract
901,392. Making helically seamed tubing. KUCKENS, A. Dec. 23, 1958 [Aug. 2, 1958; Sept. 17, 1958; Oct. 8, 1958], No. 30519/60. Divided out of 901,391. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A machine for making tubing with a helical welded seam from steel strip fed to a shaper or die extending obliquely to the feed of the strip has the angle between the axis of the strip entering the die and the axis of the tube leaving the die adjustable. Strip 1a from a reel 1 is fed by rolls 18, 19 through guides and between edge trimming cutters 27, 27a and under means 25, for welding the rear end of a strip to the front end of the succeeding strip, to a coiling die 2. To control the gap 1a<SP>1</SP> between adjacent edges of the wound strip a gauge 28 engaging an edge of the strip 1a as it is fed to the die 2, controls a motor 29 which, through rack means 30, rocks a frame 31, carrying the reel 1 and feed means, about a pivot D to correct the entry angle of the strip 1a into the die 2. A pair of feelers 32 on the die 2 engage the edges of the strip which form the welding gap and control the motor 29 instead of the gauge 28. They also control a motor 33 laterally to move the finished tube. In another embodiment, Figs. 7, 9, strip 132 is fed by rolls 130 between lateral guides 128, 129 and top and bottom guide rails 135 to a shaper box housing 101 in which it is coiled by rollers 110, 111, 103, the seam being welded to form a tube 133. The housing 101 is adjustable about a pivot 105 to adjust the angle between the strip 132 and the tube 133. The rolls 103 are adjustable radially on plungers 102 and position themselves obliquely thereon according to the pitch of the coil turns. Fig. 13. They may be replaced by balls 141, Fig. 14. The rolls 110 are similarly self-adjusting. The rolls 111 are mounted on toothed segments 122, Fig. 10, and are rockable thereby by a rack 123 driven by a motor 124 controlled by pressure members 126 engaging the guides 128 so that if strip being fed presses against one guide, the angular position of the rolls 111 is altered to compensate for this. The rolls 110, 103 may be similarly controlled. The rolls 111 are carried by a member 112 urged down by hydraulic means 116 and up by hydraulic means 119, a spirit level 121 being provided. Welding by fusion. The roll carrier 112 supports an internal seam welding arm 114 supplied with weld wire by a motor 115 and, Fig. 11, further supports, on an arm 138, an upper shoe 139 forming a backing for the tube under external seam welding means 140. Specification 901,393 also is referred to.
