Abstract

[Also in Group XXXVII] In a high-voltage isolator in which a hinged switch-blade 11 is swung between a lowered closed position and a raised open position by the rotation of an insulator shaft 23, the centre of gravity of the shaft is lowered as the blade is raised and the mass of the shaft more than counterbalances the blade, at least when the blade is in and near its raised position so that the blade will not fall and close the circuit should the operating mechanism fail when the isolator is open. The blade 11 is supported in a trunnion bearing 20 carried by a transverse pivot 19 in a link 18, the end of the blade 11 being cranked at 22 at 45 degrees to the length of the blade. This cranked end 22 is received in a bearing 27 on the upper plate 25 of the insulator shaft 23, the bearing being inclined at 45 degrees to the vertical axis of the shaft and being offset from the vertical axis. The lower plate 26 of the insulator shaft is linked to a support-plate 30 on an inclined operating shaft 31 by means of a universal joint 28 offset from the axis of rotation of the plate 30 and from the vertical axis of the insulator shaft. To open the isolator, the shaft 31 is turned through 180 degrees, causing a corresponding rotation of the insulator shaft 23 and the lowering of the shaft 23 to the dotted line position, Fig. 2. This movement of the insulator shaft 23 causes the blade 11 to rotate through 90 degrees about its axis to release a contact cam 21 from fixed contacts 13, and also to swing about the pivot 19 to a substantially vertical position. In a modified arrangement the blade may be vertical when closed, the pivot being uppermost and the insulator shaft being horizontal. In this case the mass of the insulator shaft is disposed so that its centre of gravity is eccentric to the axis of rotation of the shaft and is in its lowest position when the blade is in its horizontal open position.
