Abstract
895,553. Flexible hoses. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Feb. 23, 1961 [Feb. 24, 1960], No. 6643/61. Class 99(2). A hose for transporting low-temperature liquids comprises a flexible, corrugated metallic conduit 10 for such liquid, a larger flexible, corrugated metallic jacket 11 concentrically spaced around the conduit 10 so as to form an evacuable, annular, insulation space 12 therebetween and flexible, composite heat-insulating and radiation-impervious material 13 substantially filling the space 12. The material 13 comprises a multiplicity of radiation-impervious barriers 16 and low heat-conductive fibrous layers 15 coextensive with such barriers and disposed in contiguous adjacency between and in alternating sequence with the barriers for separating and maintaining the barriers spaced from each other and for reducing the heat transmission by gaseous conduction without substantially increasing the heat transmission by solid conduction, the individual fibres of such low conductive layers being orientated substantially parallel to the radiation-impervious barriers and substantially perpendicular to the direction of heat inleak across the insulation space, such space being under an absolute pressure of below about 30 microns of mercury. The stainless steel annularly or helically corrugated conduits 10, 11 may each be provided with braided wire coverings 14, and the barriers 16 may be of metal, such as tin, silver, gold, copper or cadmium, metal oxide or metal coated material such as aluminium-coated plastic film, but is preferably of aluminium foil. The heatinsulating layers may be in the form of precompressed sheets of unbonded glass fibre or wool. There may be means for the removal of gases which accumulate in the space 12. In making the hose, the radiation-impervious strips are helically wrapped without bonding so that the convolutions thereof overlap; the heatinsulating material may be wrapped helically or convolutely. Alternatively the strips and material are overlaid and helically wound simultaneously, the heat-insulating material having a greater width than that of the strip.
