Abstract
A method of effecting catalytic exothermic gaseous reactions at high pressures and temperatures comprises (a) passing unreacted gases first in heat exchange with gases heated by an exothermic catalytic reaction, then about the catalyst bed, concurrent and in heat exchange with gases passing therethrough, (b) collecting the unreacted gases in a central section below the catalyst bed, directing them upwardly through but not contacting the latter and then reacting the gases therein, (c) directing the reacted gases to and through a central section below the catalyst bed and then withdrawing them from the converter, and as an optional feature (d) returning them to the converter (after external heat recovery), passing them in heat exchange with unreacted gases and finally withdrawing them from the converter. The invention also provides an apparatus comprising a reactor shell with adjacent circulating plate, a gas collecting and distributing section between heat exchange and catalyst sections and the conduit and baffle means necessary for performing the method of the invention. Application to ammonia, methanol and Fischer-Tropsch syntheses is mentioned.
