Abstract
Substantially pure, granular ammonium nitrate is prepared by adding to a hot, pure ammonium nitrate solution having a concentration of at least 95% from 0,1 to 1% by wt. of hydrated aluminium sulphate to obtain a homogeneous mixture having a temperature of 165 DEG -170 DEG C., granulating the mixture and successively hardening, drying and cooling the resultant granules in a rotating cylinder by a counter current stream of air, the granules leaving the cylinder at between 80 DEG and 90 DEG C. The hot pure ammonium nitrate solution preferably has a concentration of 95-96,5% and may be prepared by concentrating a more dilute solution by heating to 175 DEG -180 DEG C. The aluminium sulphate preferably contains 17 molecules of water of crystallization and is present in the mixture in proportion 0,3-0,5% wt. After granulation, granules leaving the cylinder at preferably between 80 DEG -85 DEG C. are sieved to retain granules of diameter between 1,75 and 4,5 mm., fines passing through the sieve being recycled to the granulating device in proportion between 2-3 times the weight of the pure ammonium nitrate starting material.
