Abstract

889,286. Gas compressors. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927) Ltd. Oct. 14, 1960 [Oct. 20, 1959], No. 35526/59. Class 8(1). A reciprocating gas compressor, e.g. for air, comprises a low pressure working cylinder 5, Fig. 1, having combined inlet and outlet ports 11, 14 at its respective ends, a double-acting piston 15 disposed within the cylinder 5 and connected to a crank shaft 2 so as to be reciprocated thereby, and a reciprocating low pressure piston valve 9 connected to the crank shaft for reciprocation within a valve cylinder 7 into which open the ports 11, 14, the valve cylinder 7 communicating with inlet and delivery passages 34, 30 and the piston valve 9 being so formed that when the compressor is operating the piston valve connects each of the inlet and outlet ports 11, 14 alternatively to the respective inlet passage 34 and the delivery passage 30 to allow fresh gas to pass into and compressed gas to be delivered from each end of the low pressure working cylinder. The low pressure piston 15 is connected to a crankpin 21 on the crankshaft 2 by a connecting rod 19, the crankpin 21 having also connected to it, by a connecting rod 24, a high pressure working piston 22, Fig. 2, disposed within a high pressure working cylinder 6 having its axes displaced by approximately 90 degrees about the crankshaft axis from the axis of the low pressure working cylinder 5; the high pressure working cylinder 6 has a combined inlet and outlet port 39 under the control of a high pressure piston valve 10 reciprocably mounted within a piston valve cylinder 8 having inlet and delivery ports 38, 41 the low pressure delivery passage 30 leading, by way of an intercooler, to the inlet port 38 of the high pressure piston valve cylinder 8. Both piston valves 9 and 10 are connected to a subsidiary crankpin 25 on the crankshaft 2, by connecting rods 26 and 44, respectively, the connecting rod 26 being connected to the low pressure piston valve 9 through a crosshead 27 and a further connecting rod 29. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), a high pressure piston valve serves only as an inlet valve controlling an inlet port in a high pressure working cylinder, the head of which is provided with delivery ports controlled by automatic poppet valves. The poppet valves may be replaced by disc valves. Specification 881,441 is referred to.
