Abstract

873,370. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 21, 1958 [Sept. 5, 1957], No. 28018/57. Class 39(4). A nuclear fuel element comprises a plate-like fuel member enclosed between Be sheets sealed so as to allow free expansion perpendicular to the plane of the member. T h e seal may be by a tapered plug 12 (Fig. 1) welded at its outer edge with clearances 14, or by a pressure weld 15 between the Be sheets with a clearance 16. The sheets can then bend to accommodate expansion. They are preferably bonded to the fuel to maintain contact during bending.
