Abstract

870,560. Titanium production. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORPORATION. March 26, 1959, No.10675/59. Class 82(1) Titanium tetrachloride is reduced by sodium in a two stage process, in the first of which liquid sodium is dispersed on a finely divided carrier in the absence of titanium tetrachloride, the dispersion then being reacted in a separate zone with titanium chloride vapour, the whole process being carried out in an inert atmosphere. The carrier may be metallic titanium, sodium cholride, or more usually a mixture of the two as obtained by the reaction of sodium with titanium tetrachloride. The process may be operated continuously, part of the product being withdrawn and the bulk recycled as a carrier. To minimize formation of titanium subchlorides an excess of sodium of at least 15% over that stoichiometrically required for complete reduction is maintained in the reaction zone, so that the product contains at least 0.1% of sodium. The proportion of recycled carrier to the combined feed of sodium and titanium tetrachloride, which are added in stoichiometric amounts, lies within the range 25:1 to 60:1. Potassium, or an alloy of sodium and potassium, may replace sodium in the process. The withdrawn product is heated to 850-950‹ C. for 2-4 hours to convert the titanium to a stable form, and to remove some chloride, the remainder being removed by crushing and leaching. Suitable apparatus for carrying out the process is shown in Fig. 1, and a modification, in which dispersion and reaction zones are in separate vessels, in Fig. 5. Specification 828,374 is referred to.
