Abstract

In a gumming apparatus of the kind in which a rotatable gum roller is fed by an open-ended gum bath embracing the roller, the base of the bath being arranged in close <PICT:0870055/III/1> <PICT:0870055/III/2> proximity to the roller surface to determine the thickness of a layer of gum applied to the latter as it passes downwardly through the bath, which is supplied with gum circulating from a main tank, through the bath, and back to the tank from an overflow in the bath, the gum bath is pivotally mounted eccentrically of the gum roller axis between operative and inoperative positions, the base of the bath being inclined downwardly away from the roller surface in the inoperative position, so as to cause the gum to flow away from the roller surface, and means are provided for pivoting the bath into the inoperative position upon cessation of p operation of the apparatus. As shown, the gum bath 11 is attached to arms 13 of a pair of two-armed levers 13, 14, the arms 14 being pivotally connected by an adjustable link 16 to the core 17 of a solenoid 18. The levers 13, 14 are each pivotally mounted on a bearing member (21, not shown) which is secured by a nut 22 to the supporting framework 23, and in which the shaft 24 of the gum roller 26 rotates. An adjustable blade 28 determines the thickness of the layer of gum which is applied to the roller 26, the gum being supplied from a main tank through a pipe 32. The solenoid 18 is wired into the circuit of the machine, so that the bath is pivoted from its operative position, in which it is urged by a spring 29 against a stop 31, to its inoperative position, when the machine stops. The periphery of the bearing 21, Fig. 3, is formed eccentrically of its bore so that the blade 28 moves towards the roller 26, to close the gap between them, when this occurs.
