Abstract
A synthetic zeolitic molecular sieve, designated zeolite D, of general formula <FORM:0868846/III/1> , where w is 4.5 to 4.9, x is from 0 to 1 and y is up to 7, is prepared by forming an aqueous sodium - potassium aluminosilicate mixture having an initial composition in terms of oxide mol-ratios (Na2O+K2O)/SiO2 from 0.45 to 0.65, SiO2/Al2O3 of 28 and H2O/(Na2O+K2O) of 18 to 45, and maintaining the mixture at 25 to 150 DEG C. until the crystalline zeolite forms. Isomorphs may be prepared by cation exchanging the zeolite with solutions containing sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, strontium or lithium ions. The initial mixture may be formed from sodium aluminate, alkali, sodium silicate and aqueous colloidal silica sol. Characteristic X-ray diffraction patterns for the zeolite are given. The zeolites may be employed as absorbents by dehydration in vacuo at about 350 DEG C. Oxygen, nitrogen and argon are absorbed at -196 DEG C. and water, propane and n-pentane are absorbed at 25 DEG C. The calcium exchanged zeolite D may be employed to separate mixtures of isobutane, which is not absorbed, from mixtures thereof with propane, butane, or pentane or in drying hydrocarbons such as isobutane or benzene. Similarly normal paraffins may be separated from mixtures with branch-chained, aromatic or cyclic hydrocarbons; normal hydrocarbons are selectively absorbed. The zeolite may also be employed to dry gases or as a desiccant. Desorption may be effected by washing with water or steam or purging at elevated temperature. The zeolite may be pelleted if desired in a mixture with clay. Specific zeolites referred to are 0.47Na2O:0.53K2O:Al2O3:4.65SiO2: 6.6H2O, 0.46Na2O:0.60K2O:Al2O3:4.90SiO2:6.7 H2O and 0.92CaO:0.08K2O:Al2O3:4.65SiO2: 7H2O.
