865,108. Treating wood; proofing wood against water. MANRESA ASSOCIATES Inc. June 19, 1959, No. 21197/59. Class 140. [Also in Group XIII] In a process for drying green timber by heating the timber with a water-immiscible liquid, e.g. carbon tetrachloride or a petroleum solvent at a temperature above 212‹ F. at atmospheric pressure, the water resistance of the timber is increased by including in the liquid, in the proportion 1% by weight of the liquid, a wax having a high melting-point, e.g. paraffin wax, microcrystalline wax, or beeswax. Other treating chemicals as insecticides or dyes may also be added to the liquid for application during the drying process. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises tanks 10, 11 having removable covers 12, 13 for stacking the timber therein and upper and lower spray pipes therein which are supplied with steam from a boiler 43 and then with the water-immiscible liquid and other additives which is heated in a heat-exchanger 42. The liquid is circulated through piping to a reservoir 41 by a pump 40 while a portion is led off through a condenser 56a and a still 57 wherein water driven off from the timber is pumped at 59 through the boiler and the pure liquid is led to the reservoir. Dry steam is then blown through the tanks to drive off additional water vapour, followed by dry air from a blower 70.
