Abstract

Polymer emulsions are made by the free-radical polymerization of one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds dispersed in an aqueous medium with the aid, as a protective colloid, of a water-soluble salt of methacrylic acid and a minor proportion of vinyl acetate. Monomers specified are vinyl acetate and propionate, esters of acrylic and alkacrylic acids, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, styrene and butadiene and, as monomers copolymerizable with vinyl acetate, dibutyl maleate and fumarate. Catalysts specified are persulphates and hydrogen peroxide, which may be used in conjunction with water-soluble reducing sulphur compounds. Also present during the reaction may be a sequestering agent, e.g. a water-soluble salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid, an agent to prevent the development of acidity, e.g. sodium bicarbonate, and, in the preparation of polyvinyl acetate, a plasticizer such as dibutyl phthalate or triethylene glycol di-2-ethyl butyrate. Both catalyst and monomer may be added gradually during the course of the reaction. The Specification describes also the preparation of the above protective colloids by the following procedures: (A) by heating a mixture of an aqueous solution of sodium methacrylate of pH 6, vinyl acetate and ammonium persulphate; (B) by heating a benzene solution of methacrylic acid, vinyl acetate and benzoyl peroxide and neutralizing the product with caustic soda, and by other processes which are variants of the above procedure (A).
