Abstract

<PICT:0861640/III/1> Energy derived from nuclear fission is used to promote chemical reactions between gases. The device shown comprises an inlet tube 4 and an annular outlet tube containing baffles 5 covered with fissionable material; the baffles have holes which in alternate baffles are near the edge or near the centre. The device is mounted in a nuclear reactor, and the energy of the fission fragments promotes reactions in gases flowing through the device. The device is made of Al or its alloys, Zr, Be and the like. The baffles are coated by being degreased, coated on both faces with a dilute solution of a synthetic plastic, such as a nitrocellulose plastic, containing uranyl nitrate; the baffles are heated to about 500 DEG C. to drive off the organic material and to form U3O8. This is done about twenty times, then the baffles are heated in hydrogen to about 250 DEG C. to form UO2. Examples are given of the production of NH3 from its elements and NO from air, both at 140 DEG C. and atmospheric pressure in a thermal neutron flux of 2.5 X 1012 per sec. per sq. cm. Isomerization and cracking are mentioned.
