Abstract

<PICT:0858853/III/1> The inner wall of the envelope of an electric discharge lamp is coated with a uniform adhesive layer, e.g. of phosphoric acid, by shaking the envelope, filled with adhesivecoated glass beads, with a to-and-fro motion simultaneously with a rotating movement about two mutually right-angled axes. An apparatus for this purpose comprises a holder 1 for supporting the envelope, rotatably mounted on a frame 2 which is rotatable and longitudinally displaceable on a fixed shaft 3. A motor 6 rotates the hub of the frame 2 by means of a belt 6, and simultaneously gives it a reciprocating motion through a linkage 7. The holder 1 is rotated about its axis by gears 12, shaft 8, pulley 9 and belt 10 which encircles the pulley 9 and a fixed pulley 11 on the shaft 3. Preferably the angular velocity of rotation of the holder 1 differs from that of the frame 2.
