855,047. Making retaining rings; forging; curving. BLUTH, L. S. Feb. 2, 1959, No. 3571/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A method of making a retaining ring or circlip comprises cutting a linear strip of metal, e.g. spring steel, to a length equal to the circumferential length of of the ring; bending the strip into a discontinuous circular blank; swaging said blank to form a band of reduced thickness along one edge thereof, said band increasing in width from the centre towards the open ends of the blank, and pressure-forming said band into a corrugated wall. The ring blank 110 is bent to discontinuous circular shape by three rollers 111, 113, 114, the centre roller 111 being driven. The formed ring is then swaged between dies 120, 121, to form the band of reduced thickness 125 in the ring. Excess material is removed from the swaged-blank by trimming dies 130, 131, having opposed shearing edges. Finally, the band of reduced thickness is corrugated in stamping dies (not shown), to form a ring, as shown in either Fig. 1 or 5, and of a cross-section as shown in Fig. 2. The thicker portion of ring may be tapered as at 66 (Fig. 11).
