A hydraulic shock absorber comprises pressure and reserve chambers L, K, formed by concentric tubes 28, 2 held between an upper sealing system and a lower valve assembly the lower end of the tube 2 fitting into a circular groove formed in a lower supporting member I which has the form of a spherical cap, and a piston rod 30 being adapted to be rotated relative to the tubes 2, 28, so as to vary the loading of a spring 19 which acts on a valve 22 controlling the flow through ports I in the piston 23. Flow through the ports I occurs on rebound movement. Further ports H controlled by a lightly loaded valve 25 permit flow on the compression stroke. The lower abutment of the spring 19 is formed by a ring 17 which is in screw thread engagement with the bore of the piston 23. The axial position of the ring 17 may be adjusted relative to the piston 23 by moving the piston rod 30 inwards until a square cross-section aperture in the ring 17 engages a correspondingly shaped member 42 which is rigid with the lower valve assembly. The latter assembly comprises a valve body 11 flow through which is controlled by a lightly loaded replenishing valve 12. A compression valve is formed by a flexible lamina 8 which covers an eccentrically disposed orifice P in a member 9. The lamina 8 and member 9 are held together by a nut and bolt 10, 7, and the deflection of the lamina 8 is controlled by a spring 5 within a housing 4 which serves to retain the member 9.
