Abstract

851,462. Suction cleaners. LEWYT CORPORATION. Nov. 10, 1958 [Dec. 12, 1957 ; July 23, 1958], No. 36028/58. Class 8(1). The field winding of a motor 35, Fig. 2, driving the fan 39 of a canister-type suction cleaner forms the primary winding of a stepdown transformer the secondary winding of which is connected by leads 63, 64, Fig. 5, within a suction hose 25 to a motor 105, Fig. 12, located within a suction nozzle at that end of the hose 25 remote from the cleaner casing 20 and serving to drive a rotating brush 122. The leads 63, 64 are also connected to a lamp 106 mounted behind a translucent window at the front of the nozzle. Suction air normally passes from the nozzle inlet 112 beneath the brush 122 into a space bounded by walls 113, 114, 115 and 116 to an outlet 117 to which the hose 25 is connected but in the event of said inlet 112 being substantially completely obstructed air is drawn through a suction regulating valve 120 of the diaphragm type set in wall 115. The lead 63 is insulated whilst lead 64 is bare and each forms a helix as shown in Fig. 3a within the hose 25. The casing end of lead 63 is wound round a ferrule 65 and is connected through a disc 66 to a resilient conductor strip 53 running along but insulated from a metal tube 24 and having a spring contact 54 which when the tube 24 is inserted in the casing inlet 22 makes electrical contact with a shell 49 connected to one of the secondary leads 46 ; the other secondary lead being connected to the cleaner casing at 47 and hence to the tube 24 and the bare lead 64. The other end of the hose 25 is connected by a hand grip 26 to a metal sleeve 71 which telescopes into a wand 27 which in turn telescopes into a flared tube 86, Fig. 9. The latter is connected by a hose 91 to the nozzle outlet 117 and by a yoke 90 to the nozzle casing 98 ; the yoke having pins 99 by which it is pivoted to said casing 98. Specifications 760,275 and 881,463 are referred to.
