[Also in Group XXVIII] A suction device for holding and picking up articles comprises an elongated body having an inlet 3 adapted for connection to a tube connected to an air pressure source, a first passage 2, 5, 17 from the inlet to an outlet 10 at the side of the body and a second passage 15, 14, 22 connecting the working aperture 23 and the first passage whereby with pressure air flowing from the inlet 3 to the outlet 10 a reduced pressure is produced in the second passage and hence at the working aperture 23. The passage 15 comprises a conical annular space leading to an outer annular chamber 16. The passages 14 are arranged one on each side of the central longitudinal channel 5, the central aperture 22 being flared at the end to provide connection to the passages 14. The lower end of the bore 17 is closed by a plug 19. The working aperture 23 may be unloaded by placing a finger over the outlet 10 to divert the air to flow through the second passage to blow the article off the aperture.
