Abstract

A hydraulic fluid comprises a homogeneous mixture of water, a glycol and a polyoxyethylene ether of castor oil. The glycol may be a mixture of dipropylene glycol and a hexylene glycol such as 2-methyl pentanediol-2,4. The ether is obtained by reacting castor oil with ethylene oxide, and the product may contain 55 to 90% by weight of combined ethylene oxide. The composition may contain from 40 to 60% by weight of water, 15 to 45% by weight of the glycol, and 15 to 45% by weight of the polyoxyethylene ether of castor oil. The composition may also contain a copper deactivator such as sodium mercaptobenzothiazole alone or mixed with salicylal ethanolamine, a vapour phase corrosion inhibitor such as di-isopropyl-ammonium nitrite, di-isobutyl-ammonium nitrite or dicyclohexylammonium nitrite, and an anti-foaming agent such as a silicone oil. An example is given.
