848,319. Oil gas. FRASER, R. P. Nov. 21, 1956 [Nov. 21, 1955], No. 33330/55. Class 55(2). A continuous two-stage process for gasefying liquid fuels comprises first atomizing and vaporizing the liquid fuel in a chamber maintained at a vaporizing temperature, using steam as the atomizing medium for the liquid fuel, and then passing the mixture of steam and vaporized fuel into and through an adjoining chamber maintained at a gasefication temperature. The two chambers may be separated by a porous partition which may be in the form of a thimble and the heat for the process may be obtained by introducing a limited quantity of air or oxygen into the gasefication chamber. The gasefication may be effected in the presence of a catalyst which may be present in the porous partition or it may be introduced into the steam as a suspension or as a salt dissolved in the fuel or as a salt dissolved in water and emulsified with the fuel. Suitable catalysts are salts of the alkaline earths, e.g. calcium nitrate, or calcium oxide or calcium naphthenate. In the apparatus shown a liquid fuel and steam are introduced through an atomizing device 4 into a chamber 10 and together with additional steam added at 11 pass into a vaporizing chamber 12 formed by two opposed conical portions 12a and 12b. The conical portion 12b is of porous material containing a catalyst and the mixture of vaporized liquid fuel and steam passes through it into a gasefication chamber filled with heatconducting material 13 and a combustible gas is withdrawn through an outlet 15. To supply heat for the process a portion of the combustible gas is withdrawn from the gasefication chamber through passages 16 to enter a combustion chamber 17 where it is combusted there with air or oxygen admitted through an inlet 23, a chamber 20 and passages 19. Combustion gases leave by an outlet 22 and serve to preheat incoming combustion air.
