Abstract

842,653. Ultrasonic inspection devices. OBRAZ, J. May 1, 1957 [May 10, 1956], No. 13889/57. Class 40(7). Relates to ultrasonic pulse-echo inspection and measuring apparatus wherein a pulse is produced of duration proportional to the thickness of a workpiece or the depth of a flaw. According to the invention a gated amplifier 4 receives both the transmitter 1 pulse and the echo signals from workpiece 3, the amplifier being normally biased to low sensitivity but being capable of passing the transmitter pulse to the input of multivibrator 5 to trigger it from a first to a second stable condition to produce a gating pulse fed back to the amplifier to increase its sensitivity so that the first echo signal is passed to the multivibrator to terminate the gating pulse. The multivibrator output is integrated by unit 7 which feeds moving-coil meter 8 calibrated in distance. The thickness of the workpiece or the depth of a flaw therein is thus measured without interference from the effects of later echoes. To prevent amplifier blocking by the leading edge of the gating pulse an integrator may be inserted between the multivibrator output and the amplifier input.
