840,489. Seats. LORENZ, A. March 13, 1958 [March 21, 1957], No. 8057/58. Class 52(2). In a reclining chair having a seat 4 and backrest 5 swingably mounted on a support 1, the seat and back-rest move as one unit to a tilted position and then they move to a reclining position with relative movement between them, Fig. 3. As shown in Figs. 1 & 3. back-rest 5 is pivoted at 11 to the upper arm of a lever 9 pivoted to the support at 10. The back-rest is also pivoted at 8 to an arm 7 rigid with the seat. Relative rotation of the back-rest and seat is prevented by a link 12 pivoted at 11, 13 to these parts respectively. Pivot 13 consists of the pin 13 received in the upright arm 15 of L-shaped slot in link 12. On pressure against the back-rest, pin 13 remains in slot arm 15 and the seat and back-rest tilt as a unit about pivot 10. Projection 17 on link 12 then abuts pivot 10 so that the link is lifted to bring pin 13 into the long arm 14 of the slot in the link. During further tilting the pin 13 rides in slot arm 14 to allow relative rotation of the back-rest and the seat. A spring 16 urges pin 13 into slot arm 15. Movement of the seat 4 is controlled by the engagement with pins 18 on the support of slots 19 formed in blocks 20 carried by the seat. A leg rest 6, swingably mounted on pins 18 by links 22 is projected by a link 23, the rear end of which is pivoted at 24 to the lower arm of lever 9. In modifications, the link 12 with its pin and slot pivot is replaced by a knuckle joint the parts of which are held in alignment by spring means and which is broken either upwards or downwards by engagement with an abutment as the seat and back-rest move beyond the tilted position. In these modifications, the movement of the seat is controlled by a link pivoted at its upper end to the support and at its lower end to the seat.
