839,996. Pneumatic gauging-apparatus. T.I. (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd. April 11, 1958 [April 13, 1957], No. 12152/57. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXXVI] In a gauging device, a measuring head is maintained at a predetermined distance from the test piece by the operation of a pneumatic servo system. As shown, Fig. 1, a source of air pressure is supplied via a pipe 10 and symmetrical branch pipes 11, 12, containing constrictions 13, 14, to the interiors of bellows 15, 16, the pressure in bellows 15 being reduced by the flow of air through a flexible pipe 17, out of an orifice 18 in the measuring head 2 to impinge upon the test-piece 1. Any deviation from a predetermined distance A between head and test-piece alters the pressure in bellows 15, and a bell-crank lever 4, which is responsive to the difference in the pressures in bellows 15, 16, moves the head 2 to restore the predetermined spacing A, the value of which is set by adjusting the distance B between an orifice 19 in the pipe to bellows 16, and a plate 20. The displacement of the head 2 is indicative of the profile of the test-piece, and may be indicated by a pointer, or electrically from a transducer (not shown) moving with the head. Fig. 2 depicts a similar device in which the measuring head 2 is mounted on the shaft of a piston 23 responsive to the difference in pressures in chambers 15, 16.
