835,041. Thermallyactuated valves. WALTON ENGINEERING CO. Ltd., SPICER, H. E., CROSBY, R., and SIMPSON, F. A. Nov. 25, 1957 [Dec. 3, 1956], No. 36956/56. Class 135. A valve consisting of an inlet 6 and outlets 7, 8 controlled by a rotary closure member 4 has a linearlyexpanding temperature - responsive element 9 and coupling means for converting the linear movement to rotary movement. As shown, the temperature-responsive element consists of a chamber containing a semi-liquid substance which, on expansion, transmits through a sealing diaphragm and piston loaded by a spring 10 a force to a rod 12 which carries a radial pin 14 coacting with a cam slot 17 in a sleeve 16 which is non-rotatably mounted in the housing. Thus, axial movement of the rod 12 causes rotary movement of the closure member 4 when the pin 14 is situated in a helical portion of the slot 17. The slot 17 also has a portion or portions parallel with the axis of the rod 12 whereby over part of the range of movement of the latter no rotation is imparted to the closure member 4. Axial adjustment of the sleeve 16 is provided by a screw-threaded extension 20 and nut 21. The valve is suitable for use in controlling the flow of coolant from an engine, one of the outlets 7, 8 being connected to a heat-exchanger whilst the other is connected to a by-pass leading back to the engine. In a modification, the valve is arranged to be operated also in the event of overheating and for this purpose a fusible plug is so arranged in the valve housing that when an excessive temperature is reached it releases a spring-loaded rotary member situated outside of the housing and having a pin-and-slot connection with the sleeve 16 whereby the latter is moved axially to operate the valve.
