Abstract
832,868. Winding strands. GEOFFROY-DELORE S.A. Jan. 14, 1958 [Jan. 17, 1957], No. 1299/58. Class 120(2) [Also in Group XXV] Strands to be twisted together in two steps are first wound on to a rotatable drum, from which they are then drawn 'off and wound on a reel. The reel 10 is driven at a speed controlled by a tension roller journalled on a pivoted lever 13 which, upon slackening of the assembly 2, rotates against the action of a spring 14 to increase the tension of a driving belt 12. A reversible haul-pulley device comprises a sheave 38', Fig. 5, journalled on the end of a rocking arm 57 controlled by the tension of the cable and pivoted about the axis of a sheave 38. The stands are passed over pulleys 32-35, are wrapped around sheaves 38, 38<SP>1</SP> and pass to a traverse mechanism to be wound on the drum 9. The sheave 38 is driven from a gear 40 through a reverse gear and transmits drive to a lay-shaft 90. The drum 9 is driven from the lay-shaft 90 through a gear train containing a friction clutch 45 and free wheel 46, Fig. 7. In the first step, the sheave 38 is rotated in a clockwise direction in Fig. 5 and drive is transmitted to the drum 9, the engagement pressure of the clutch 45 being regulated by the rocking of the lever arm 57 to maintain constant tension in the assembly being wound. In the second step, the sheave 38 is driven in the opposite sense and the drum 9 is rotated by the unwinding assembly. A second free wheel 47, Fig. 7, connects the clutch 45 with a boss of the stationary frame 7 so that it retards the free rotation of the drum 9, engagement of the clutch being still regulated by the lever arm 57. The traverse mechanism comprising a pulley 48 and roll 49 is reciprocated on two guide bars 50 by the engagement of the roll 49 in a helical groove 51 on a cylindrical casing 53 which is driven from the sheave 38. A stop motion comprises an apertured guide 69 and plate 70 of conductive material supported on an insulating member 68 which is slidably mounted on a conducting bar 65 and normally held in position by a spring 72. An electric circuit through the bar 65 is completed when a broken strand makes electric contact with the plate 70 or when a thick place in the assembly 2 engages the guide 69 to carry the member 68 forward until the plate 70 engages a contact 71. A similar stop motion may be placed between an inlet guide 5 and the machine. Initially, the strands are fastened to a swivel chain having its other end attached to the drum 9 and in the second step the assembly is initially fastened to a similar chain having its other end fastened to a reel 18 adjacent the reel 10, so that the full length of strands may be utilized.
