Abstract

A dentifrice (including ointment), a mouth wash, chewing-gum or a lozenge contain as an essential active ingredient a compound of formula <FORM:0824680/VI/1> where R is a hydroxymethyl or aminoethyl group and X is a hydrogen atom, or R is a formyl group and X is a hydrogen atom or a phosphonyl group or a salt or complex of such a compound. Compounds so included are pyridoxine, pyridoxamine, codecarboxylase, pyridoxamine phosphate, Vitamin B6-borate complex, and pyridoxal, i.e. 2-methyl-3-hydroxy-4 - formyl - 5 - hydroxymethyl pyridine and their salts such as the hydrochloride. The amount included in the preparations may be from 0.05 to 5% by weight. Pantoyltaurine and bis - betapantoylaminoethyl disulphide may be added to the composition to interfere with L.acidophilus and pantothenic acid metabolism. Papain, to digest protein, may be added to chewing gum or, as in Example 8, to a toothpowder containing pyridoxine hydrochloride as active ingredient. A dental ointment, Example 3, consists of pyridoxal hydrochloride 0.005 gms; white wax 0.054 gms; white petrolatum 0.941 gms.
