Abstract

824,204. Connecting-rod bearings. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. Jan. 15, 1958 [Jan. 31,1957], No. 3447/57. Class 12 (1). A connecting-rod big-end bearing is formed with an arcuate recess 17 in its internal bearing surface and a step 18 leading up from this recess to an arcuate land continuous with the main bearing surface, the step being positioned angularly in advance of the area 14 of peak load on the bearing. The step 18 may be positioned between 30 and 90 degrees in advance of the area 14 and the recess 17 may extend over an arc subtending an angle α of between 20 and 50 degrees. The bearing comprises two semicylindrical liners 15, 16. In the liner 16, adjacent the recess 17, there is provided a relatively deep transverse groove 21 which communicates with an arcuate feeder groove 22 which is continued at 24 into the adjacent part of the liner 15. Oil under pressure is delivered through a radial passage 29 in the crank-pin 28 to the grooves 24, 22, 21 and recess 17 shortly before the moment when the peak load occurs at the area 14. Recesses 25 are provided to facilitate the escape of oil. In a modification, oil is supplied to the transverse groove 21 and. recess 17 by way of a short circumferential slot 26 and passage 27, Fig. 4, formed in the outer surface of the liner.
