Abstract
821,106. Automatic control systems for X-ray apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 24, 1957 [May 24, 1956], No. 16145/56. Class 38 (4). In radiographic apparatus means responsive to the radiation emerging from a subject in front of an X-ray tube controls the voltage applied to the anode of the tube. In a mass radiography unit, X-rays passing through a subject give a picture on a fluorescent screen which is photographed and also influences a photo-multiplier tube 6, Fig. 2, to produce across a resistor 8 a voltage dependent on the intensity of illumination. This voltage is applied through a valve amplifier 15 to operate relays such as MR and LR in sequence as required until the voltage applied to the anode of the X-ray tube (not shown) is reduced sufficiently by changing tappings on an autotransformer (not shown) to give a picture of the desired contrast with varying subjects. Tube 6 also charges a condenser 7 until its voltage, representing the integral of light intensity, is sufficient to operate a relay 12 which disconnects the anode supply to the X-ray tube and thereby determines the exposure time. Condenser 7 is discharged before each exposure by a switch 14. Use of saturable reactors instead of valves is referred to.
